    Research Assistant (Summer Position)

    The Opportunity

    The Alberta SPCA is seeking an organized and motivated post-secondary student to join our Strategic Initiatives team this summer as a Research Assistant.

    Working closely with the Strategic Initiatives team, you’ll contribute to projects focused on understanding and addressing the underlying causes of animal welfare issues. You’ll assist with research, data collection, and resource development that helps shape evidence-based strategies to improve outcomes for animals and people across Alberta.

    If you’re interested in animal welfare, social issues, research, or public policy, this is a chance to gain hands-on experience and contribute to meaningful work.

    What You'll Be Doing

    • Digging into research on a variety of animal welfare topics
    • Gathering and organizing data from public sources, surveys, and internal materials
    • Turning information into clear, useful summaries, reports or presentations
    • Supporting the development of educational and program resources
    • Collaborating with different teams on shared projects
    • Sharing ideas and contributing to how projects are designed and delivered

    • Are detail-oriented and able to manage multiple priorities

    Position Details

    Duration: 8 weeks
    Hours: 35 hours per week (flexible scheduling within business hours available)
    Compensation: $20.00/hour

    Education Program Planner (Summer Position)

    The Opportunity

    The Alberta SPCA humane education program nurtures empathy and compassion for animals, people and the environment, and an awareness of the interconnection between living things and the earth we share. We also provide information about meeting the needs of domestic animals and foster a sense of responsibility for animals in our care. Our program is geared towards teachers from K-12 and resources are aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies. Visit everylivingthing.ca for more information.
    We are looking for Program Planner to develop new resources that align with the Alberta Programs of Study, reflect current pedagogical strategies and consider Indigenous and francophone perspectives. We encourage Elementary, Jr. High and pre-service teachers to apply.

    What You’ll Be Doing

      • Develop animal welfare/humane education cross-curricular activities including project-based learning (K-9) that promote empathy development and critical thinking skills that connect to the Alberta Programs of Study. (K-6) and (7-9).
      • Use effective written communication skills to create teacher’s guides with classroom resources, objectives and curricular connections.
      • Engage with other individuals/groups to integrate multiple perspectives in teaching materials and resources.
      • Have opportunities to create videos, develop website content, etc.

    Peace Officer

    The Opportunity

    The Alberta SPCA is seeking four peace officers to join our team and support our mission of animal well-being in Alberta. Ideal candidate possesses knowledge of livestock and companion animals, with experience in law enforcement or animal-related education preferred. Alignment with our mission of humane treatment for all animals is essential.

    Reporting to the Provincial Supervisor of Animal Protection Services, the peace officer will Investigate complaints of animals in distress and take appropriate actions, including legal action, within the scope of their legal authority, in accordance with the Animal Protection Act. Duties consist of enforcement of the Alberta Animal Protection Act, conducting investigations, filing documentation, court appearances and traveling throughout Alberta.

    We’re seeking Officers to cover zones north, east, and west of Edmonton Alberta. Candidates must be able to commute to our Edmonton office as required

    Successful candidates must work a 9-hour daytime shift, participate in an on-call rotation, and be available for evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. They must also be able to meet the physical demands of this role.

    Qualifications and Requirements

    • Applicants must meet the criteria required to obtain Alberta Peace Officer status. This may include:
      • Currently possessing a Community Peace Officer (CPO) Level 1 appointment or Alberta Peace Officer (APO 1) appointment.
      • Possessing current or recent enforcement experience with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), Calgary Police Service (CPS), or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
    • Minimum of two years of same/similar practical experience.
    • A diploma in Law Enforcement will be considered as an asset.
    • Familiarity with livestock such as cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, and goats, as well as companion animals.
    • Must successfully pass and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance as a condition of employment.
    • Must have a class 5 driver’s licence provide us with a clean driver’s abstract as a condition of employment.
    • Ability to work alone.
    • Ability to manage sensitive situations with both mental resilience and emotional intelligence, navigating them with empathy and professionalism.

    Working Conditions

    • Be able to work a 9-hour, daytime shift, with a 1/2-hour lunch, with a possibility of overtime. Must be able to work weekly on-call rotational schedule.
    • Be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
    • Daily travel throughout their designated jurisdictions throughout the province.
    • Willingness to be called out on days off.
    • Willingness to attend other peace officers areas when needed.
    • Willingness to join committees to help promote and protect animals within Alberta.

    Abused or neglected animal

    Under the Animal Protection Act, peace officers have authority to investigate concerns of animal abuse or neglect if there is reason to believe that an animal is:

    (a) deprived of adequate shelter, ventilation, space, food, water or veterinary care or reasonable protection from injurious heat or cold,
    (b) injured, sick, in pain or suffering, or
    (c) abused or subjected to undue hardship, privation or neglect.

    Abandoned animal

    Stray animals and abandoned animals are different.
    An abandoned animal has been intentionally left behind by their owner or caretaker, without proper care or intention to return.

    A stray animal may or may not have an owner or caretaker, and is wandering at large (off the owner or caretaker’s property).
