On this day we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives fighting for freedom, and the animals that innocently died along side them.
Animals were an integral part of the war effort in both the First and Second World Wars. Horses and mules hauled equipment and supplies, dogs were used to get medical supplies to the injured on the battlefield and to sniff out danger, and pigeons were critical in delivering important messages across dangerous terrain. Millions of these animals lost their lives not knowing what they were fighting for, and many more pets in the United Kingdom were culled as the country prepared for war.
