Bean's Story

Spring is an exciting time of year, all about fresh starts and new beginnings. If there was ever a creature who needed a fresh start — it was little Bean.

This adorable black and white kitten came to us in rough shape. It’s believed he had been hit by a car… and one of his hind legs appeared broken. He was lucky to have been found at all, limping along the side of a rural road.

Despite the significant pain he was in, Bean craved any kind of care or attention. While at a veterinary clinic awaiting surgery, staff members all noted how Bean was constantly at the front of his kennel seeking pets and scratches.

THINKING ABOUT THIS POOR KITTEN, JUST A FEW MONTHS OLD, UNABLE TO WALK YET DESPERATE FOR EVEN A FEW MOMENTS OF AFFECTION, IS TRULY HEARTBREAKING.

The good news is Bean’s leg wasn’t broken. Turns out it was his pelvis that was a mess… both broken and displaced. As bad as that sounds the veterinarian could save Bean’s leg. The young cat underwent surgery to reconstruct the hip joint in a way that would allow Bean to walk again.

Bean required six weeks of kennel rest and physiotherapy following his surgery. That didn’t stop him from constantly seeking attention from anyone passing by. A simple glance from clinic staff was enough to get him purring loudly — how could they resist a quick visit with the adorable cat!

We are so pleased to share with you that Bean’s leg and hip healed very well — despite the amount of trauma this young cat experienced. Bean can now run around with ease, and even jump as though he was never in pain.

And best of all, Bean has a new home with a family that showers him with love and attention. Bean, like so many kittens, spends his days finding mischief. He playfully antagonizes the family dog then darts for cover under the furniture. And at night, Bean snuggles members of his new family… purring loudly as he tucks in under his favourite little girl’s chin.

Thanks to the support of our generous donors, Bean is living a fulfilled life with a loving family that he adores.

“Thank you for saving Bean,” his new family told us. “He’s so full of personality, and he makes us laugh every day. We can’t imagine our home without his love and kitten energy.”

And we could not do the work to save animals like Bean without our compassionate supporters — like you!

The past year has been exceptionally busy for our Alberta SPCA Peace Officers. By making a gift today, you ensure our team can always respond when animals are in distress.
