About our Pet Safekeeping and Crisis Care Programs
Pet Safekeeping Program
The Alberta SPCA’s Pet Safekeeping Program offers temporary care of pets whose owners are entering a shelter due to family violence. Most shelters cannot accept pets and pet owners in these situations often remain in abusive relationships until they know there is a safe place for their animal to go. Pets of survivors are often harmed or threatened by the abuser in an attempt to maintain control over the survivor.
Pets typically stay in our program for three weeks. When they are re-united with their family, the Alberta SPCA provides a pet starter kit with food, toys, treats and supplies as many survivors flee their violent home without the necessary supplies to properly care for their animals.

Crisis Care Program
Our Crisis Care Program offers temporary care of animals whose owners are facing an unforeseen crisis situation such as emergency medical care or eviction.
Like our Pet Safekeeping Program, clients of our Crisis Care Program are cared for while their owner works to deal with the crisis at hand. Our team regularly comes into contact with people who will not take steps to help themselves until they know their animals will be properly cared for.
