It's hard to imagine that the content little American Eskimo in this photo once faced a life of neglect and pain but in 2002 when we found her, she was in serious distress.

Below are a series of images that tell Jersie's story from then until now. It's updates like these that serve as a reminder that every day animals need us - and that we can help change their lives!

Our sincere thanks to Erin for providing us with pictures and details about Jersie's life today. It doesn't matter how many years go by, hearing that an animal we helped is thriving in a loving home is a tremendous gift!

Investigating a complaint about horses on a property, our Peace Officer noticed the small white dog tied to a swing set. After viewing the horses, he decided to take a closer look at her. As you can see in this photo he took, she had been tied to the swing set and then became so tangled she couldn't move more than an inch or two in any direction.

What wasn't visible from a distance was the enormous open wound around her neck - the result of a collar that was too small and had become embedded in her skin. When our officer saw it, he knew immediate care was vital. He took her into protective custody and drove her to a local veterinary clinic.

The veterarian examined Jersie and determined surgery was needed right away. She was sedated and the delicate process of closing the gaping wound around her neck began. This image was taken as she was being prepped for her surgery.

This is where Erin comes in. Erin worked as an Animal Health Technician at the clinic where Jersie was being treated. Having had an American Eskimo before, Erin felt an immediate connection with her. She was also amazed at the strength and heart Jersie showed - she began eating and moving around shortly after she came out of surgery and never looked back. It didn't take long for Erin to know she had to be the one to give Jersie all the TLC she'd been denied in her young life.

Legal arrangements were set in motion so that Erin would eventually be able to adopt Jersie. In the meantime, she took Jersie under her wing and began nursing the little dog back to good health.

The original owner was charged under the Animal Protection Act. She pleaded guilty and the court subsequently fined her $500. She also surrendered Jersie to the Alberta SPCA, which in turn enabled Erin to finalize her adoption.
