Animal Welfare Specialist

PURPOSE

  • Identify, define and manage issues related to animal welfare and the Alberta SPCA
  • Promote the humane care and responsible use of animals
  • Build partnerships and network with animal care groups and humane societies, government and livestock industry to create awareness and understanding of animal welfare issues
  • Interaction with various stakeholders in various capacities from internal, animal care groups, government and industry

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as Alberta SPCA media and stakeholder contact
  • Represent Alberta SPCA at meetings in various capacities with government, animal care groups, and livestock industry
  • Provide leadership to encourage various partners (government, veterinarians, industry - both companion and livestock) to work collaboratively and with shared resources to develop strategies that address animal welfare issues
  • Responsible for a variety of initiatives including identification, public awareness programs, and strategic planning in animal welfare opportunities
  • Responds to inquiries from government, industry, and the public concerning animal welfare activities
  • Provide content and assist with the production and distribution of AnimalKind, the Alberta SPCA's general newsletter
  • Work with Communications Manager to ensure agency communications and messaging remain consistent
  • Work with and assist the Communications Manager in writing/editing communications related to external and internal initiatives, department programs and projects.
  • Assists, as required, in writing/editing documents including policies, practices and procedures
  • Provide training to Peace Officers relating to animal health and welfare
  • Provides support and assistance to all Alberta SPCA departments
  • Maintain professional expertise in companion and livestock welfare
  • Attend relevant conferences, training sessions and symposiums

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Alberta SPCA
  • Knowledge of animal health and wellness requirements for all species
  • Knowledge of livestock production systems, animal behavioural science, research methodologies and design
  • Be familiar with the agri-food industry and associated trade issues, international trade requirements, federal and provincial policies on animal health
  • Political sensitivity and ability to think strategically
  • Demonstrated people skills that promote assistance, respect and a caring attitude
  • Current and emerging issues identification, communication skills and management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational abilities
  • Strong competency with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently
  • Ability to facilitate meetings
  • Demonstrated ability to develop project plans and lead project planning meetings
