Humane Heroes in History

Many people have made an impact on how the world views and treats animals – often overcoming tremendous obstacles. These humane heroes in history contributed to making the world a kinder place – not just for animals, but for people too – through their actions and example.

Albert Schweitzer

Albert Schweitzer, a famous doctor, musician and humanitarian who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952. From the "will to live" evidenced in all living beings, Schweitzer developed his ethic of "Reverence for Life" as a universal principle. By stressing the interdependence and unity of all life, he was a forerunner of the environmental and animal welfare movements.
