Session Descriptions

Kit Jenkins:

  • Working Together to Place Pets in Your Community

Every homeless animal in your area is the shared responsibility of the community. Agencies share other resources: donor dollars, media time, pool of potential adopters. Why not share the resource of adoptable pets? This workshop addresses ways to share the burden among your community’s animal agencies and spread the word to the public about your adoption needs.

  • Neuter Before Adoption: Tools to Get You to Your Goal

In a perfect world, every agency would sterilize all pets before they go home.  In the real world, however, many agencies struggle to 100% NBA (Neuter Before Adoption). It’s always a gamble to release pets unsterilized, even with a strong compliance program in place. Therefore, the primary goal is to sterilize as many animals as possible before release and to continue working toward 100% NBA.  The secondary goal is to have total, verified compliance for those released with a voucher or “promise” programThis session will address practical ways to address complete NBA and effective “promise” programs while you work toward that goal.

  • Motivating and Keeping Good People in Animal Welfare

With low pay (or no pay) and high stress, most people in animal welfare work for the pride and passion of the cause. But burnout is high, and we often let our brightest and most talented jump ship because we don’t know how to keep them motivated. This workshop addresses reasons for retention problems and presents some practical strategies to create an environment that keeps people on board.

Cathy Housdorff:

  • Crisis Communication

No one wants to be in a crisis, but they happen. The key is to be prepared - and have friends you can rely on. Using a real-life example, the Director of Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development's Communications Branch will demonstrate how planning and cooperation will help you get through a crisis.

Duane Landals, DVM

  • Working with Your Veterinarian

Do you know when to call in your veterinarian? Do you have vaccination protocols, and disease control procedures in place? What is the relationship between your group and your veterinarian? Get answers to these questions and more from the Registrar of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association.

Rosanne Tollenaar:

  • Screening Volunteers In, Not Out

If volunteers are vital to the programs and services you provide, how do you make sure you are engaging the right ones?  By determining the risk, following the 10 Steps to Screening and keeping the big picture in mind, you can engage the unique skills, experience and passion of your volunteers!  Discuss and explore a new approach to screening that welcomes and values the contributions of volunteers.

Nicole Johnston:

  • Professionalism in Dog Training

What does it take to be a dog trainer or behaviourist - and just what is the difference? How can you measure the effectiveness of a trainer? How do you find a good trainer and what kind of certification do you look for? Find out what a certified dog trainer has to offer.

Cathy Thomas:

  • Building the Hinton & District SPCA Animal Care Facility

The newly-opened animal care facility in Hinton didn't just happen - and getting it built took more than just shovels and hammers. Get a first-hand account of what's involved in assembling funds, land, expertise, and community goodwill to get a shelter built in a relatively small community.

Morris Airey:

  • Animal Protection Legislation

The Director of the Alberta SPCA's Animal Protection Services will outline the Animal Protection Act of Alberta and other important pieces of legislation you need to know.
