Companion Animals | Livestock | Entertainment & Exhibition | Recreation | Trapping | Research, Teaching & Testing | Wildlife | Exotic Animals | Position Statement: WildlifePosition The Alberta SPCA accepts the responsible use and management of wildlife only if the animals' welfare and humane death are ensured. Rationale The Alberta SPCA understands humans' traditional consumptive and non-consumptive uses of wildlife: that certain wildlife may be legally killed for human consumption, as a population management strategy, to protect domestic animals from predation and for commercial purposes; that certain wildlife may be legally farmed or ranched for profit; and that certain wildlife may be legally owned and exhibited for commercial purposes. The Alberta SPCA believes the welfare of the animals must take precedence over financial considerations, personal pleasure and gain in humans' stewardship of those animals. The Alberta SPCA believes responsible wildlife management should be premised on the inherent right of species to exist; and should include conservation of wildlife habitat and special measures to preserve species that are endangered, threatened or rare. |
