Position Statement: Exotic Animals

Position

The Alberta SPCA cannot accept either the keeping of exotic animals as pets or the commercial trade in exotic animals for the retail pet trade.

Rationale

The Alberta SPCA understands that certain exotic animals may legally be commercially traded and personally owned.

The Alberta SPCA believes that commercial trade in exotic animals is not acceptable.

There is evidence that many exotic animals suffer distress and inhumane death as the result of incompetent capture, handling, and transport; that many exotic animals kept as pets do not receive the specialized care, housing, handling and protection they need; and that their welfare and humane death are not ensured.
